Collection: Pear trees
I grow these pear varieties for their flavour, their beauty, their interesting histories, and, for some, their resistance to disease. Some are European/Western pears, and some are Asian pears. The main differences between the two are that Asian pears are generally round, and crisp when ripe with a subtler flavour, in contrast to the 'pear-shaped' European pears that generally soften when ripe. Another difference is that Asian pears often flower earlier, leading to a slight risk of flower damage due to late frosts in northern locales.
Pollination note: like most fruit trees, pears require cross-pollination from a different pear variety in order to produce fruit. Asian pears and European pears cross-pollinate each other.
Rootstock note: All are grafted onto OHxF 333 rootstock, which is a semi-dwarf rootstock that offers resistance to fire blight.
Tree grades: All our trees have had a strong season of growth and are high-quality, top-grade trees. All are sold bare root, while dormant. For more information see the General nursery information page.
