Macoun is an excellent apple for cold climates – it is cold hardy, and it blooms relatively late, making it less likely to be damaged by the occasional very late frost. Macoun apples are crisp, juicy, medium-sized, and ripen late in the season.

This is an apple that is excellent fresh off the tree, but they have a short shelf life, so don’t expect it to hold up well in storage.

Disease resistance:

Resistant to fire blight, susceptible to apple scab.

Parentage:

McIntosh x Jersey Black. Developed at the NY Agricultural Experimental Station in Geneva. First crossed 1909, released 1923, and named for the Canadian fruit breeder W. T. Macoun, who worked with the Central Experimental Farm near Ottawa, and was a founder of the Ontario Horticultural Association.
